China’s e-CNY Wallet Introduces Digital Red Packet Feature Inspired by Alipay & WeChat Pay

Hina Afzal July 5, 2025

China’s e-CNY Wallet introduces digital red packet feature, marking a major step forward in the country’s digital currency adoption. With this latest update, users can now send digital red packets (hongbao)—a culturally cherished tradition—through the official e-CNY wallet, mimicking popular systems already used by Alipay and WeChat Pay. This innovation not only modernizes a long-standing custom but also reflects the Chinese government’s broader push to make its central bank digital currency (CBDC) more accessible, user-friendly, and competitive in the global fintech ecosystem.

What Are Digital Red Packet feature?

In Chinese tradition, Digital Red Packet feature or “hongbao” are monetary gifts handed out during Lunar New Year, weddings, or other celebrations. In recent years, digital payment platforms like WeChat Pay and Alipay transformed this into a mobile-friendly feature, letting users send virtual envelopes to friends and family with personalized messages and amounts.

Now, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) is bringing this widely-loved function to the e-CNY (digital yuan) platform, integrating it into the government’s official digital wallet app. Users can create and send e-CNY digital red packet feature directly to contacts or in group chats during festivals and personal milestones—further encouraging mass adoption of the digital RMB.

China’s digital currency The e-CNY app is currently only available in Beijing and Shenzhen, two cities and regions. Additionally, there is no set launch date for the digital currency, which is still in the testing phase.

Capital of Kunming, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Hebei, and Sichuan. Jinan, the common capital of Yunnan and a service of Shandong, turned into an all-computerized yuan last week and consolidated the city.
According to the analysis, the total volume of transactions, including yuan, increased by 14% to 100 billion yuan between the beginning of e-CNY in December 2019 and the end of August.

How the e-CNY Digital Red Packet Works

The feature is simple but powerful:

  • Users log into the e-CNY wallet app
  • Select “Send Red Packet”
  • Enter the amount and add a message
  • Choose the recipient (individual or group)
  • Send the packet instantly

The user experience is deliberately designed to mirror Alipay and WeChat Pay, making it easier for individuals already accustomed to mobile payment gifting to adopt the e-CNY red packet feature seamlessly.

Strategic Push for CBDC Adoption

The addition of this red packet feature is more than a cosmetic update—it’s a calculated move in China’s broader CBDC adoption strategy. While e-CNY has been in pilot phases across several Chinese cities, mass usage has lagged behind popular consumer apps.

By incorporating culturally meaningful features like digital red packets, the central bank is transforming e-CNY from a simple payment method into a fully integrated lifestyle product. This strategic move is especially timely with the upcoming Lunar New Year—a season when billions of red envelopes are exchanged across China, both in-person and through digital platforms, making the e-CNY wallet more relevant and appealing to everyday users.

Why It Matters

This feature makes e-CNY more appealing to:

  • Everyday users, who want convenience and familiarity
  • Merchants and retailers, who benefit from increased payment options
  • The government, which wants to reduce reliance on private fintech ecosystems

It also strengthens China’s global leadership in the race for central bank digital currency innovation, showcasing how digital currency can merge technology with tradition.

Global Relevance

As nations worldwide explore the adoption of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), China’s e-CNY model has emerged as a focal point of global attention. A key takeaway from its approach is the integration of cultural traditions—like digital red packets—into the digital currency experience.

This move highlights that for a CBDC to succeed, it must go beyond technical efficiency and establish an emotional and cultural connection with users. By blending modern fintech innovation with deeply rooted customs, China’s e-CNY Wallet introduces digital red packet feature, marking a major step forward in the country’s digital currency adoption, China is setting an example of how digital currency can resonate with the public while promoting broader adoption and user engagement..
