On 16th December 2020, The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has proclaimed singer Meesha Shafi and eight others including Leena Ghani, Iffat omer, Ali Gul Pir, Maham Javaid, Fariha Ayub, Syed Faizan Raza, Haseemus Zaman, and Humna Raza guilty of running a defamation and slander move against singer-turned-actor Ali Zafar on social media platforms and asked the trial court to begin its proceedings against them. Although Zafar accepted Humna Raza’s apology and now she is not required in the future investigations.
The backstory of this case
Shafi accused Zafar of sexual harassment back in April 2018. According to FIA, she failed to produce any pieces of evidence or witnesses in favor of her allegations thus making her claims against Zafar ‘untrue’ and ‘defamatory’.
Zafar filed a complaint with FIA cybercrime wing Lahore in November 2018 asserting that a number of Twitter and Facebook accounts have been posting ‘defamatory’ content against him claimining that they are a part of some slander move by Shafi.
But this is not the final verdict of this case.
The case is still to proceed in court and FIA is not the judge as FIA’s job is to compile charges, investigate and forward them to the courts. The final verdict will be of the court and only court, as said by Meesha Shafi’s Legal team. They are confident in proving Zafar guilty of the harassment charges and declares this FIA’s investigation report as a ‘bad’ example of abuse and power in this country.
