Removal of Dirilis: Ertugrul from Netflix Upsets Viewers

Faiza Haq August 29, 2021

Netflix has decided to remove Dirilis: Ertugrul series for the US and UK viewers. Multiple Netflix users have flagged this issue. Precisely, subscribers will be unable to watch the popular Turkish drama after 20 September 2021. Indian and Pakistani users, however, can watch the drama unconcerned. Many members have expressed disapproval over this decision.

About Dirilis: Ertugrul

Dirilis: Ertugrul is a phenomenal attempt by Turkish producer Mehmet Bozdag. This television series is based upon Turkish historical fiction and stars Engin Altan Duzyatan as Ertugrul Bey. It depicts his adventures in Kayi tribe in the 13th century, before the arrival of his son, Osman I. Osman I then is later picturised to become the founder of the mighty Ottoman Empire. With 400 plus episodes, this program is worth binge watching. But Western viewers may not be able to pay to watch the show. Sad indeed!

Upsetting News

Ertugrul certainly made an impact on many. Some were even said to become Muslim after watching this mammoth of a series. However, certain Arab countries have allegedly banned its viewing because of a so-called Turkish political agenda. Sadly they will not be able to watch how good Ertugrul is. The Western audience, too, will be in the dark from watching this series on Netflix. Why would you remove such a good show with such a high moral content? Many fans feel the ‘West is jealous‘. Some say it is a ‘conspiracy’. Yet others give a valid point that maybe the license to view expired for them. Some also feel that maybe the West feel the need to remove it because it started having an impact.

Dirilis: Ertugrul in Pakistan

However, Pakistani fans are lucky indeed. Not only do we get to watch the series on state-run Television, but we also get to hear the dialogues in Urdu dubbing! All thanks to PM Imran Khan, who specifically ordered this entertainment for us. So we have been ordered to learn ‘Islamic history and ethics’ – so much learning in one go! Thank you Sir for making studies fun for us! The righteous Ertugrul is called a hero by many here. Duzyatan himself affirmed that Ertugrul was ‘a real hero’ and ‘smart, mature and just’. He praised his ‘vision, strength, purpose in life and all of his values’ and likened him to Batman and Spider-Man.

God knows why would Netflix do away with such a great series of Turkish adventure! Only many will be now deprived of viewing such a great show. As for fans of Pakistan, we can continue bingeing on all episodes. Bring on the popcorn!
