Americans
The Government Agency of Examination (FBI) has uncovered that India’s unlawful telephone and misrepresentation focus took more than $10 billion from American residents. Under the guise of tech support, scammers are primarily targeting seniors in the United States.
According to information released by the FBI, there has been an increase in call center fraud this year. In 2022, the American was conned out of more than $10.2 billion in 11 months by him alone. This is a significant increase from last year when call center fraud cost US citizens just $6.9 billion.
The FBI has decided to appoint a permanent representative to the US Embassy in New Delhi as the situation spirals out of control. This new agent will collaborate with Indian law enforcement to target these phony call centers. According to Suhel Daud, the South Asia director of the FBI and legal officer at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, these con artists took billions of dollars from elderly people and used them for business, romantic phone calls, and tech support. He claimed that he was calling pretending to be an investor or something.
Daud also shared the figures, stating that he had received 780,000 complaints this year and 850,000 complaints in 2021, according to the FBI’s complaint portal. He also claimed that out of his $10 billion, $3 billion was stolen for investments, $2.4 billion was stolen from business emails, $1.2 billion was stolen from personal information breaches, $1 billion was stolen from romance, and $781 million was stolen.
On the delicate nature of relations between India and the United States, Dowd stated that these scams were hurting India’s image in the United States, despite the fact that the issue was not one of national security.
