Launch of $7.99/month Virtual Reality Service by Meta

Facebook and Instagram parent Meta recently announced a new subscription-based service for its virtual reality (VR) business. Called Meta Quest, the subscription costs $7.99 per month or $59.99 per year and is compatible with the Quest 2, Quest Pro, and even the upcoming Quest 3 VR headset.

Meta VR users who subscribe to the service get access to two new games per month, allowing them to build a large collection of games within a few months. According to the details, these games will remain in their game collection until they pay their monthly or annual subscription.

The announcement of this new VR subscription comes as Meta faces stiff competition from Apple, which recently released the Apple Vision Pro and is threatening to take over a large portion of the VR space. Apple Vision Pro

With features like EyeSight, vision, hand, and eye controls, the Apple Vision Pro is certainly one of the most advanced VR headsets on the market.

Now Apple or any other big tech company dominating the VR space is definitely bad for Meta’s public image or even financial prospects because the company literally stepped aside and changed its name from Facebook to Meta in 2021. “Over time, I hope we’ll be seen as a metaverse company, and I want to tie our work and identity to what we’re building,” Meta CEO Zuckerberg said during the rebranding.

Meta, which now competes directly with Apple, still wins when it comes to prices, with the Apple Vision Pro priced at a whopping $3,499, while the Meta Quest headphones range from $299.99 to $999.99.

However, both companies have a lot of ground to cover because virtual reality, like artificial intelligence, is a new industry with many opportunities and untapped areas.
