Movie Review ‘The Father (2020)

Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman have moved the audiences around the globe with their portrayal as a father-daughter duo in the Oscar-winning screenplay, ‘The Father’. The two stars were both nominated for the Best Actor and Best Actress at the 93rd Academy Awards. Anthony Hopkins won the Best Actor award making him the oldest actor to ever receive an Oscar. Movie Review ‘The Father’ (2020)

‘The Father’ begins with an old man (Anthony Hopkins) and his daughter Anne (Olivia Colman) arguing over the fact that Anthony refuses to be helped by a caretaker. Anthony is seen suffering from progressing Dementia and is slowly losing his grip on reality. He fails to come to terms with his condition and is reluctant to accept any help. Anne is in the background trying to be there and make him come to terms with his deteriorating condition.

Florian Zeller’s masterpiece brings a sensitive subject as Dementia. What a person suffering from this condition goes through, how they experience life as their thoughts get eclipsed by the manufactured reality that their mind makes them see. Zeller’s execution of this film is almost horror-like and thought-provoking at the same time.

The brilliant acting talent of Hopkins and Colman sheds a light on the inner workings of a mental health patient and everything around him. The way that those moments are portrayed in the film makes you feel intrigued and feel empathy throughout the course of the movie. How the patients suffering from this condition become disoriented, confused, and agitated as they cannot trust anything around them. How everyone around them, including themselves, fails to fully see the reality of the situation.

Anthony Hopkins became the oldest actor in history to win an Oscar, after he won the best actor award for his role as a man battling dementia in “The Father”. A well deserved win 👏 #Oscars #Oscars2021 pic.twitter.com/5Ibl9M3sAJ

Conclusion

‘The Father’ isn’t just a film, it is an insight into the dark world of patients suffering from Dementia. It takes you on a roller coast journey into the unstable world of Anthony. How he fails to differentiate between the past, present, and the future. This movie is about human relationships and the challenges it takes when a loved one’s personality shifts while suffering from a mental illness and how it affects the patient as well as the people around him.

“For those who can stomach it, it’ll stay with you, for longer than you might like. I know it will stay with me.”
