Workers at Tesla announced in a letter to management that they are now joining a union with Workers United Upstate New York. Tesla workers announced on Tuesday that they are starting a new movement with the intention of forming a union to fight for labor issues and job security issues.
Tesla employees wrote a letter to company management to make an official announcement on behalf of the union. The intention of the Tesla employees to join Workers United Upstate New York as a union was mentioned in the letter.
In their press release, Tesla workers stated, “We are only asking for a seat in the car that we helped build.” They added, “We believe unionizing will give us a voice in our workplace that we feel has been ignored up to this point.”
If these plans are successful, one of Tesla’s first labor unions will emerge, something that the company has avoided, unlike every other automaker in the United States.
Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla, is said to be against labor unionization and has even spoken out against it. After tweeting in 2018 that employees would lose their stock options if they formed a union, the CEO received a lot of criticism.
“We, as workers, deserve to be able to negotiate fair labor with our employers, and there are many changes I’d love to see at Tesla for the benefit of the workers,” stated Tesla employee Alexis Hy while expressing his opinion.
Elon and Tesla have yet to publicly address the unionization of Tesla employees.a
