A country’s theatre industry is inextricably linked to its audience. The stuff that viewers watch on television is not just for their amusement. But it is also stored in their subconscious minds. The content that youth see has a significant impact on their thinking. When a person sees a strong character. He or she strives to be just like them. On the other hand, someone who watches a losing character give all the blame to fate and. Hope for a miracle to come applies the same philosophy to their own life.
The dramas that are broadcasted nowadays didn’t take this point into consideration whether it supports a strong story-line. Or not but they are just worried about their Television rating points TRPs. They then further strengthen their projects with so-called modernism in dramas. Our culture is eastern culture but they are portraying western culture in the name of modernism. The only two things that we can now see in today’s dramas are vulgarity in the veil of modernism. And the other is an innocent poor crying woman.
Modern Dramas
Modern dramas are mainly focused on poisonous family relationships and an unfinished love tale. Now, if we go back to the old PTV classic serials, when the camera was certainly not up to par, but the morals and storylines were far too flawless. The old dramas were shot in natural light with a fuzzy camera, whereas today’s plays use such good lighting and cameras that the audience find them overly artificial.
Despite their flaws, the dialogue delivery in most vintage plays was more than natural and solid. Their dramas flowed naturally because of the quiet behind them. The actors and writers’ Urdu pronunciation and grammar became cleaner. Waris, a masterpiece of the age, is widely regarded as the most accurate picture of Pakistani society, and viewers recall that the streets were deserted at the time it aired.
In modern dramas,
the English language is used more frequently, and the dialogue delivery is not as powerful as in older dramas. Actors today have no command of the language, and Urdu has deteriorated. It is currently considered a flaw of writers or directors who are too indolent to pronounce words correctly. Now, if we look at the overall subject of those period dramas, we can see that they were more thought-provoking and cerebral, but yet easily digestible.
As an example, I’d like to highlight some of the older plays that are still memorable. Haseena Moin (late), a well-known writer from the past, certainly knows how to captivate an audience with a captivating plot.
In dramas such as Tanhaiyaan, Unkahi, and Dhoop Kinare, Haseena Moin has depicted powerful and empowered women. Saniya and Zara, two sisters in the hit show Tanhaiyaan, forge their own paths in life after their parents abandon them. The comedy in the drama is wonderfully balanced by the two characters of Qabacha and Buqrat. Love, grief, a hint of charming romance, joy, and happiness are all present in the play.
The other dramas of Haseena Moin like Dhoop Kinare, Unkahi, and Parosi can also be taken into account. The problems and worries in their lives are also present but instead of crying over them, Haseena wrote her characters much strong that can change their lives through their hard work and still manage to remain happy. Such ingredients are totally missing in today’s world dramas. Instead of entertainment, the dramas gave the audience nostalgia and depression.
