To Combat Corruption, Punjab To Automate Parking Fee Collection

Abdullah Khan February 28, 2023

Lahore: The officers of the Lahore Parking Company have been given instructions by Secretary Local Government Punjab, Dr. Irshad Ahmed, to use CCTV cameras to check the parking lots.

The automation of the fee collection system was the first response to Lahore Parking’s issues.

Dr. Irshad presided over a meeting of the Lahore and Faisalabad Parking Company on Tuesday at the Punjab Civil Secretariat. According to the secretary, the Lahore Parking Company had to tighten the monitoring mechanism in order to guarantee 100 percent collection.

Automated Parking Additionally, he stated that “an immediate survey should be conducted to determine how many additional parking sites can be established in Lahore.” He also requested that suggestions for the formation of the parking company’s board of directors be submitted.

In addition, the Secretary requested a report on the automation system within a week to prevent the company from engaging in corruption.

However, “due to the manual collection, a significant portion of the parking company’s revenue is susceptible to corruption, and the company is experiencing losses.”

He also said that the company should be making money rather than losing money because there are so many cars in the city.

Previously, Punjab established a “Motor Transport Information Management System” for the integrated computerization of motor vehicle registration, route permits, fitness certificates, and traffic rule and regulation enforcement.

On the other hand, the automation of vehicle record and related field operations will contribute to the reduction of hassle and enhancement of transparency.

The government has taken steps to improve the system, but its primary goals are as follows: Ensuring effective revenue receipt monitoring; providing vehicle identity numbers for integration with tax net and other transport-related databases; creating a data hub to facilitate other official agencies like the motor vehicle examination, motor registration authority, and criminal record office. The most important outcomes that the system covers are:

30% increase in revenue Integration of the route permit with information about the fitness of the vehicle The distribution of computerized route permits
