In Pakistan, adults have always glorified the university life, saying that it is only at university where we learn the true meaning of freedom. From a very young age, we are exposed to movies that set unrealistic expectations of university life. – The Other Side Of University Life.
Remember those Karan Johar movies that used to make you think that university life is all about love, music and meeting Rahul to your Anjali? Well, the reality is far from it. Here are 5 things I wish I knew before stepping into university:
1. Friendships don’t last forever.
This might not come as a shock as we always hear how people you befriend in university aren’t there for the long haul. This was entirely true in my case. In first semester, I had a really big group and I thought we would remain so. But, time reveals everyone’s true selves. That group of 15 people soon breaks down into 4 groups of people all holding grudges against each other.
2. Romeo doesn’t exits, but deadlines do!
If you thought you were going to meet that special someone in university, well I’ve got some bad news for you. You will be so busy chasing assignments, presentations, and worrying about keeping up your attendance that you won’t get a chance to even think about this. Trust me, the right person will come around, your priority should be yourself right now.
3. You will be the broke-st you’ve ever been.
It’s no news that number of hangouts and lunch plans increase immensely when you’re in university. There is nothing wrong in treating yourself once in a while and it’s all fun and games until you realize you’re not saving any money at all. Maintain a part time job, rent out your books and be smart with your cash.
4. Procrastination isn’t cool anymore.
Procrastination does nothing but cause unnecessary stress and pressure to an already hectic life. Catch up on your sleep, don’t stray from your routine and always try to make extensive notes in class so you don’t miss out on anything.

5. Don’t skip classes.
Every class counts. You miss one class and the class is way ahead of you, the teacher assigns you a project and you’re in a group with people who don’t do any work and it starts affecting your grades. Doesn’t sound so fun now, does it?
Have fun, but take university seriously. Just because no one will tell you what to do anymore doesn’t mean you should forget why you’re there in the first place.
