Tuba Amjad September 21, 2020

Pakistan’s latest and hit drama serial JALAN directed by Aabis Raza and written by Sidra Seher Imran was banned by PEMRA a week ago.

”

The drama serial’s main cast includes Minal Khan, Emmad Irfani, and Areeba Habib. The storyline of the drama serial is based on an illicit relationship between a man (the character is being played by Emmad Irfani) and his sister-in-law (the character is being played by Minal Khan).

Complaints were registered against the serial as it is airing content that is against our teachings, and is promoting such hatred in society as a negative image between sisters has been portrayed, in short against our core, social, and Islamic values.

PEMRA took notice of a few ongoing dramas from different channels promoting and airing immoral content. The authority has imposed a banned on the re-airing of the drama serial Ishqiya and Pyaar Kay Sadqay. https://twitter.com/omair78?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E130585860982402306%7Ctwgr%5Eshare_3&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdnd.com.pk%2Fjalan-escapes-ban-drama-to-go-on-air-as-per-schedule%2F198231

Also, PEMRA issued a notice against the latest drama serial JALAN. The channel received a warning to review the content of this drama again.

”

PEMRA banned the drama serial as it received many complaints against the airing of the show. Officially, the announcement was made on 10th September 2020, by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA). It added that serial will no longer be produced or aired on the screens under section 27 of the PEMRA Ordinance.

Section 27 (prohibition of broadcast media or distribution service operation) states, “broadcasting or re-broadcasting or distributing of any program is prohibited if PEMRA believes that the program is pornographic, obscene, vulgar, or is offensive to the commonly accepted standards of decency”.

Sindh High Court reverts the ban which was imposed by PEMRA

Recently, we have received the news that Sindh High Court has overturned the ban on the drama serial JALAN and now the serial is to be scheduled again on the screens from Wednesday onwards.

”

The trailers were on aired and confused the viewers as it was banned by PEMRA. A highlighted journalist Omair Alvi has recently announced in his tweet about the Sindh High Court’s decision to overrule PEMRA’S ban on the drama serial JALAN.

As per the decision it is stated that PEMRA has no right to impose a ban on on-air content. It is further elaborated that PEMRA is an authority that regulates the content of a drama and can’t put a ban on it.

”

The team of drama was on a table of discussion with PEMRA regarding the content and both ends are now in a win-win situation.

The drama crew talked about editing the obnoxious content from the episodes and now the drama serial JALAN is ban free.

The drama will be on aired from Wednesday at 8:00 PM sharp only on Ary Digital. The changes and editing can be observed further as the drama’s 14th episode is on-aired yesterday.
